The Asr prayer (Arabic: صلاة العصر ṣalāt al-ʿaṣr , "afternoon prayer") is i of the five mandatory salah (Islamic prayer). As an Islamic twenty-four hours starts at sunset, the Asr prayer is technically the 5th prayer of the mean solar day.[1] [ better source needed ] If counted from midnight, it is the third prayer of the day.[ii] [ meliorate source needed ] [3] [ better source needed ]
The Asr prayer consists of 4 obligatory rakat. An boosted iv rakat are recommended to exist performed before the obligatory rakat.[4] As with Zuhr prayer, if information technology is performed in congregation, the imam is silent except when announcing the takbir,[5] i'tidal,[vi] and taslim.[7]
The period of Asr prayer begins approximately when the sun is halfway down from noon to dusk (diverse branches of Islam differ on the starting point; some say that it begins when the shadow of an object equals its bodily length plus its shadow during noon, others say that the actual length must be doubled).[ citation needed ] Asr prayer ends at sunset, when Maghrib prayer begins.[ citation needed ] Shia Muslims are allowed to perform Zuhr and Asr prayers one after another, so they may perform the Asr prayer earlier the actual menstruum begins.[ citation needed ] Barring the Hanafi school, which forbids prayer combination, Sunni Muslims may just practice this if they are traveling and incapable of performing the prayers separately.[ citation needed ] Amongst Sunnis, Salafis allow the combining of prayers for a wide range of reasons such as when various needs or difficulties arise (taking precedence from Hanbali and Shafiite schools).[ citation needed ]
The Asr daily prayer is mentioned as the middle prayer in the Qur'an at sura 2 (Al-Baqara) and information technology is emphasized on the Muslims to protect this prayer significant that it should be performed at all costs, ayat 238.[8] al-Asr is also the title of the 103rd chapter (sura) of the Qur'ān.
The five daily prayers collectively are one colonnade of the V Pillars of Islam, in Sunni Islam, and 1 of the ten Practices of the Faith (Furū al-Dīn) co-ordinate to Shia Islam.

Ja'fari and Zaydi schools of idea [edit]
According to the Ja'fari and Zaydi schools of thought the fourth dimension menstruum within which the Asr prayer must be recited is the following:
- Time begins: one time the Dhuhr prayer (mid-twenty-four hour period daily prayer) has been recited.[9]
- Time ends: at the starting time of the setting of the Lord's day.
However, it is very important to recite the prayer as soon as the fourth dimension begins. Letter 52 of Nahj al-Balagha contains instruction of Ali to his governors on the timings of salat, "The Asr prayers tin can be performed till the dominicus is still bright and plenty time of the day is left for a person to cover a altitude of 6 miles."
Hanafi, Hanbali, Shafi`i, and Maliki schools of thought [edit]
The time catamenia inside which the Asr prayer must be recited is the post-obit:
- Time begins: The Sunni schools differ on when the time begins. The Maliki, Shafi`i, and Hanbali schools say it is at the fourth dimension when the length of whatever object's shadow equals the length of the object itself plus the length of that object's shadow at apex. The dominant stance in the Hanafi schoolhouse says it begins when the length of any object'south shadow is twice the length of the object plus the length of that object's shadow at noon.[ten]
- Time ends: Once the sun has completely fix beneath the horizon. However, it is frowned upon (and sinful in the Maliki school) to delay the prayer without a legitimate excuse to the point of the day in which the sun turns a pale red or orangish colour equally it begins to set, though it would still be considered to have been prayed on fourth dimension.
The Islamic prophet Muhammad said, "He who observes Al-Bardan (i.due east., Fajr and `Asr prayers) will enter Jannah."[11]
In another hadith: Muhammad said 'He who misses his Asr Salat (i.e. performs it later its specified time) is as if he had lost his wife, children and all his wealth.' (Sahih Muslim)
